Humble beginnings

In 1951, Charles M. Colwell earned his living repairing trucks in an open field. Within the year, he bought an old schoolhouse in his hometown of Hancock and poured a concrete floor. This was the beginning of Colwell Diesel Service & Garage. Starting with only hand tools and writing invoices on the back of an old shingle, Charles grew the business through his reputation for hard work and excellent service. In 1957, Colwell Diesel Service became an International Dealer.

Expansion

Having outgrown the Hancock location, Charles M. Colwell bought an old lumber yard on Route 1 in Ellsworth in 1976, where Colwell Diesel Service remains to this day. After graduating college, Charles's sons Charlie and George joined the business. As the nature of the industry changed over the next few decades, Colwell Diesel's reputation for excellent service continued to grow. Colwell Diesel also began selling and servicing Generac Generators to help Maine families with their home backup power needs.

The Next Generation

As Colwell Diesel continues to expand into the 21st century, George's daughter Kate and Charlie's son Dan stepped in to lead the company for another generation. A wave of corporate buyouts has left Colwell Diesel the only family owned and operated International dealership in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The world may change around us, but we'll always be who we've always been.
